When possible, provide hands on activities that directly relate to the job you do or the field you are representing. Engaging students in an activity instead of just talking to them helps them to retain your message. Feeling, touching, engaging in a hands-on activity leaves a lasting impression on the students. People remember how something makes them feel much longer than something they read or heard. Learn more about our history and how we got started. We are passionate about empowering communities and making a difference in people's lives.
If you give away SWAG, be sure it means something. Find swag that is connected to your mission or your work. For example….at EGLE when I am out recruiting, I am very frugal with what I take and I only take things that are recycled or ethically sourced. This allows me to give my audience something to take with them, but also engage students in conversation as to why these items help to represent who we are. I also try to slip in to the conversation, why it is so important that we (EGLE) don’t bombard people with ‘stuff’ that will eventually end up in a landfill somewhere just to get exposure for our logo. There are many ways to get involved with H2omich.org. Attend one of our events, become a member, or volunteer your time. We'd love to have you on board!
Try to relate what you do to how it impacts the student’s community and everyday life. This might be difficult in some instances but helping students to see the connection to something they personally know or experience can be a light bulb moment for students when looking at careers. From providing education to supporting health care initiatives, H2omich.org offers a range of programs to support communities in need. Learn more about our work.
Remember to put yourself in your audiences’ shoes and focus on the very basics. Students and even adult career explorers don’t know what they don’t know so having a ‘pitch’ statement that is a solid synopsis of what you do in relation to how it impacts your event audience is important. Try to limit using industry acronyms or jargon as this can confuse and be an immediate turn off to students if you are not explaining what they mean. This might seem like an obvious tip, but we become so accustomed to speaking a certain language in our careers that we sometimes forget those outside of our job/industry have no clue what we are talking about.
